Five free fonts
Check out some more nice font freebies I found at Myfonts.com. Log in and add these to your cart for a complimentary download: Novecento Wide (scroll down the page to find the freebies), Nashville Serial, Abril Fatface, Deftone Stylus, and Wichita Serial. I often grab the free weights (ha, that sounds like I'm at the gym) for use in logo and print projects, and then go back and purchase the heavier or lighter weights as I need them.

New fonts from the Lost Type Co-op
I see that the Lost Type Co-op has added some new fonts since the last time I was browsing over there. Check out Arvil and Lavanderia in particular. To download them, you can make a donation to the designer in any amount or enter "0" for a freebie.

Build 3D paper letters from a nifty font
Speaking of Fontstruct, I found something cool over there. Punched Out is a free font that allows you to type letters, print, cut, fold, and glue to make 3D forms. Created by Tobias Sommer, it's available for download at Dafont or Fontstruct. I gave it a try while watching TV. It's a little tedious, but the result is fun!
I printed the letters in gray, scored along the center of the dashed lines, and folded so that the printing ended up on the inside of each letter.

Make and share fonts with Fontstruct
Have you checked out Fontstruct? It's a free online tool for building fonts based on a grid. As you can see, it's possible to achieve a pretty wide variety of styles. Make your own or download some of your favorites shared by others. (Setting up a free account is required.)

Be a type designer
If you liked Kern Type, you might enjoy designing letterforms, too. Try the Shape Type game and see how closely your letters resemble samples from actual typefaces.

Kern Type, a typography game
Test your graphic design skills with Kern Type. "Kerning" is the practice of adjusting the spacing between characters, evenly balancing the negative space for an attractive result. If you imagined that your company's logo designer plucked a pretty little icon out of the air, typed the company name next to it, and called it a day, think again! The characters in each word are nudged around to achieve perfect visual balance. (If the designer was a pro, that is.) Give it a try yourself.

New font: Ribbon
The Lost Type Co-op is now offering Ribbon, a geometric display typeface that resembles... ribbon. As with all fonts at Lost Type, you can name your price and download instantly (enter zero for a freebie). If you chip in $30, you'll get a lovely specimen book with contributions from a dozen designers mailed to you. I'm doing it.

The "Kill Comic Sans" game
If you're someone who loves to hate Comic Sans, the casual script released by Microsoft in 1994, you'll like this time-waster. Take out your aggression on floating words and kill Comic Sans. My position on Comic Sans: I dislike it (and other childlike, informal handwriting fonts similar to it), but maybe one day I'll get a project for which it's perfectly suited. So far, that day has not come. Blast away.

Quiz: Typography terms
Are you interested in typography? Fontroduction is a little website that teaches you basic terms and classifications. Test yourself with a quiz at the end. A note: Music plays when you complete the quiz, so if you're sneakily using this as a diversion at work, turn your sound off first!

Replace one font with another very quickly in Revit Structure (filter based replacement)
Ever wanted to replace a font with a different one in a Revit project, including adjusting all text, dimensions, and labels?
I came across a very handy add-in through the RevitDE blog. Its called BIMTools, and its from a company called Sofistik. Here is some translated text from the original blog post:
have to change all text, dimension styles and lettering families...
This can be in a very simple way, the text of all type of label types to adapt quite easily.
via
RevitDE Blog Post
Here is some further explanation from the company site:
This tool allows all project elements such as text labels, dimensions, beams, columns and wall labels will be changed and adapted in a step within a Revit. Filter functions allow a targeted selection of the desired label text. The tool works across multiple projects such as converting, saving an enormous amount of time while drawing standards.
BIMTools download page (Translate)
Actual German download page http://www.sofistik.de/loesungen/soficad/bimtools/registration/
The above text hints at the fact that the replacement is 'filter based'.
NOTE 2: The installation process adds the BIMTools ribbon to RST 2012, but not to RAC.
Here is a bit of an excerpt from the help PDF that may assist you in interpreting the Ribbon:
Text Change type
With this additional feature you are able to type the text of your dimensions, annotations
and change text of your project on time and to appoint a uniform. The change affects
from here to all families in the project located.
search for objects that match the filter rules, GE
starts and earnings in the lower left of the dialog box is displayed.
The text type-name can be changed by this function automatically. The advantage here is one
unambiguous syntax and therefore a similar designation of text types. If the name of Textty-
groups want to change so you can uncheck "Rename" is activated.

- After registering, you will get a link to a ZIP file. After unzipping that file, you will get access to two EXE files - one for Revit 2012, and on for Revit 2012 x64 (64-bit).
- Run the installation for your version.

The Periodic Table of Typefaces
Periodic tables are always popular, but I think one of the smartest is Cam Wilde's Periodic Table of Typefaces, representing 100 of the most "popular, influential, and notorious" of the world's typefaces ranked by popularity and grouped by class. Download a high res version for yourself in English, Spanish, or Portuguese. Or head over here to order a few different prints, get desktop wallpaper, or purchase wall decals in various colors from Scribble On Everything.
Thanks for the link, CaLynn!
